Improvement 1202 [2017 version] by DamaiMikaz Improvement 1202 [2017 version] by DamaiMikaz
This is becoming a yearly thing.
I started this art thing 4 years ago when struggling with health issues. Daily speedpaints became a way to kill time and forget about the pain.
In 2015 I redid the thing after a year or (almost) daily painting as a way to establish how far I've gotten. Same goes for last year.

As for this year's painting. I'm not sure if it's real improvement, or if it became a subtle way of storytelling over the years.
The path the paintings take is kind of a metaphor for the story (project Emion) taking a much darker path over the last few part/chapters, going from a bunch of optimistic young people rebelling against a government towards some seriously messed up stuff when they gradually find out the true history of the empire they're fighting.

I don't feel like I've improved as significantly this year as I did over the previous years. I'm sure it has to do with me painting less (health issues, my day-job, and doing a lot of writing all take time from me). But then again, I'm not sure if one can even keep improving so significantly as you hit higher levels in art. This year I focused more on environments and composition, rather than the purely technical stuff, because I figured that would suit my goal of telling stories with art more. I still got a long way to go, but I'm not okay with the results. I'm definitely getting closer to the feeling of the novel :)

It’s very interesting to see the progression of your work over the years. I do this too sometimes. Very well done!

I can definitely see improvement between the last two. It's more subtle than from 2015 to 2016, but it's there. The drawing feels more solid, the clothing has more weight to it, the atmosphere is stronger, and the rendering is tighter. I agree with you though, the higher your skill level, the less often the big jumps happen, but I feel like that can make things interesting. Often times it's the little things that really pull together a drawing, and I think that's the case here. :)

I love how this is something of a journey in more ways than one.  Sato is in the same setting for each of them, but it's almost like he's moving and progressing to other parts of the setting.

I love how the stance changes every year. In the first, Sato seems lost, and faces more to the left of the viewer. In the second, he has a more exploratory pose, and directly faces the viewer. In the third, he looks confident, as though he's been here many times, and he faces far to the right of the viewer. In the last, he still faces the same direction, but his posture is challenging and cautious, ready to face some threat unseen to the viewer. The storytelling changes are excellent, and I absolutely adore it~

Yeah. The first two were created more or less on accident. On the 3rd and 4th I tried to make it a continuing story of Sato wandering through a landscape :D

It's getting draker and gloomier each year but also you level of skill goes overboard now.
Comparing 2014 with 2017 is kinda funny

My problem simply is not being able to combine these two things. _(;ω;」 ∠)_

Priorities.
If you want to make time for something, it means you have to skip out on doing something else that would normally take your time.

Let this be a reminder that art can grow beyond our wildest dreams with a few years and plenty of dedication. Truly impressive stuff damai!!

On the note of this year's improvement, I'd say the fact you focused on the environment and composition is precisely what shows your improvement. By including more (or sometimes less) in a image and how tour lay it out greatly affects the way it is perceived by an audience, and as you said, helps tell a story. So while it's a more subtle growth, it is no less significant or important on the journey to the goal you have set yourself! Whether it is great strides or baby steps, covering any distance is good, and you are justified in feeling proud of how far you've come, from last year, and from when you first started.

One final thing, while your art might possibly never develop to the standard you seek, remember that the stage it was at years ago impressed me and many others, and even more so now. So no matter how it turns out, I'm sure Emion will leave hundreds, if not more, speechless at it's standards and excellence!

I see improvement. Each year you add more to the scene so it gets more and more complex. Stairs! Perspective, cool light setting. You HAVE improved.
It's almost as if he's going somewhere at the same time. First a long walk through the forest and now he finds himself someplace hidden far into the forest (I imagine).

mistress: fuck me int the butt!! I keep freaking forgetting to put 'sub' when i write to put this sentence small >:V!! lol. Sorry. Laughing irl..i'm a mess BUT!! i really wanted to ask you one question. I've seen this in MANY artist description whether it be here or tumblr(mostly here e H e. hardly on tumblr cause i don't stumble upon on them as frequently. BUT!! someone found a shit ton of people being like this : O!! So yeah). But why do you guys always push yourself so hard? When people who aren't experienced, well taught in art, know what to do, shit allot about art LOVE and adore your art so well. And they come up to you in irl and or threw social internet life. They tell you 'i love your art!!' , 'you're art is gorgeous', 'i wish i can make art like you'. So many positive comments yet..artist STILL keep thriving and thinking that they don't improve or aren't that good in art. Because of one single negative thought. That can really mess up the groove. Like i know that you can improve to a point that you can go far as to make your art realistic. I get it..I know how that feels sadly v n v..with something personal. That's smacked in my face by everyone. BUT! I would really love it if you artist could just tone it down on the harsh or even bad thoughts about they're art. By saying that you haven't improved. bish! You have improved in many people eyes. And you should really see that! I really do hope that artist see how much we love that you try your hardest and than you improve without you seeing. It just makes me and or anyone else out there see they're favorite artist push and think so negative about them. Like as to not liking how they're art turned out. I know how hard the art the world is but you have to have a good positive thought within your mind when you look at your art. Like loving how you changed allot from 2014-2017 that's allot of improvement. And you should be happy that you did hun <3! I would be glad to hug you and congratulate you on improving. I do hope you understand that we as the customers, and viewers really love your art no matter what. It can look like 2014 and people will still love it. It gives a spark to those tiny artist hearts <3!! It makes us be happy but when it comes to a description like you dislike your art and or saying that you haven't improved at all. It makes me frown and well get upset! Feel like smacking you for saying that to yourself! Don't say that and just be happy :3!! I love your art hun i really do but i dislike it when you say such harsh words to yourself. Don't do that please?. If you still do it please just push it down. Never dislike an art piece that came so far as to evolve as to this.

Also WOW that sucks that you have to deal with health issues. I do hope you get better hun. And that goes for your job as well. I hope it goes well. BUT! I understand on writing takes allot of time..i mean LOOK at what i wrote for you xD took allot of minutes lol. But i do love writing sorry if it's too long.

I'm just surprised that this art piece meant something so impowering which is pretty fucking awesome but sad because it's true..people do end up feeling like crap. I felt that way when i found out about things that scared me to death. But i still have some hope it becoming a better world. Just gotta keep that tiny hope in us that can help us out in irl. Always remember that there will be people who will help you out.

Lastly just wanted to say this ;w;..sorry if i miss corrected my sentences or whatever it may be

It's not about being falsely humble or insulting fans or anything like that.
It's just that when you get to a certain level with art, your perspective on what's good and what's not change as well. Art pieces that you might've looked up to as a kid might seem quite simple as you grow up. The same goes for your own art as you grow.

mistress: seriously it does?? well that sucks..and nah when i look at my own art pieces i still love them even though they're super cheesy and not the best in the whole world. I still find a piece of joy within in it. Because it showed that i improved threw out the years ;w;..yay..lol. But i still suck at it xD i'm still growing. So i know little of the big o'l art world. It's just crazy how artist change they're views on art pieces that look beautiful to us.
