Yep. Another rant. It all started a few weeks ago.
Apparently there was a topic on DA's forum that was about "profile picture whoring". I honestly didn't know such a thing existed, let alone it would be allowed on DA (artists shaming, isn't it?). I don't even know the URL anymore, neither if it was removed by the mods or not. How I got to know about this topic, you ask? Well, I was tagged. Apparently my current profile picture was posted by someone in the topic, who obviously forgot that I would be mentioned when the picture was posted. The idiot :')

Anyhow. I understand DA's culture nowadays. While I can still remember the days on the internet in which you were only a written username with some text, nowadays the internet is all social media. And social media is full of people screaming for attention. Showing pictures of themselves, just to show how pretty they are and how much their lives are better than yours. Yeah, these are sad times, somehow. I mean, we're nowadays having people diagnosed with "facebook depression". That's how deep down we went.
As artists, a lot of people have always been opposed to this phenomenon. They wanted their profile about their art, not about themselves. And so they massively hated on all the artistic nude and erotic photography, saying it was done for generating pageviews alone. Not completely true, but understandable, at least to some extend.

What I still don't understand, is why my picture would be labeled as "profile picture whoring". I mean, it only shows me, drawing. No cleavage or whatnot. Not even my face. And as I'm drawing on a tablet, it seemed to me that it was pretty relevant to my art... you know.

So okay... that might've been just some fool that put me in that topic. To be honest, I don't even remember it's username anymore.
What did surprise me, was a profile that I came by a few days ago. A girl that had generated over 30k pageviews in just a few days, and more watchers than I've had for over the first 5 years that I was here. It surprised me. And I wondered "why would this girl be so popular?" Maybe she had amazing art, you know...

I checked her gallery, and ended up utterly disappointed. It was full of nude pictures or herself. Not the artistic kind of nudity that you often find around here, and which I can (to some extend) even appreciate. Nope, those were crappy webcam pictures. 600 x 800 pixels maximum, low quality jpeg compression. And while the girl did have kind of a cute face, the poses weren't anywhere near artistic, let alone the quality. I was sure about one thing; this wasn't about art. This was about attention seeking.
Curious as I was about why this was obviously such an internet phenomenon, I clicked the tumblr link beneath the pictures. And suddenly I came to understand what made her so "popular". While DA has pretty strict rules when it comes to mature content, tumblr doesn't. I guess I don't have to line this out for you.

What did surprise me, were the comments she got on DA. All positive. Not a single one complaining about the nudity on DA, on her pictures being not art, or the crappy quality. None of the comments where blocked. No, there were just fans. Lot's of them. And that's basically where I stopped understanding.

So when I post a picture from myself on my profile, a decent picture on which I'm drawing, on an art site... just to show people who is the person behind that tablet... I'm an attention whore. But when some random other girl, posts crap-quality screenshots of her naked body in suggestive poses on an art website, it's suddenly all okay and everybody adores it.

For gods sake, DA's userbase. If you start hating on something, then at least be consistent ~__~

Note; usernames have been left out on purpose. I don't want people to be personally attacked just because I wrote this. So don't ask for it

There are a lot of people who draw sexually explicit material on this site for attention. And they have more fans that you can count.

Honestly.... IMO the only career that the girl has for herself in the future is the porn industry if she keeps this up -_- because if other employers look her up and see her pictures they won't want to hire her.

yeah, sadly, if you look carefully DA has changed a lot nowadays, full of sad people like these (don't know if sad would be the right word) but the worst part is that it seems that the majority of the userbase is not about art )= ... it remind me what a classmate told to a friend when she told him she had a DA gallery for her drawings, he said "oh, the site for free porn" ... No, I disagree!

I am a girl and I often dont really know whether to hate, ridicule or pity idiotic girls like that who have obviously no respect for themselves.. People tell me that I am pretty all the time yet I somehow hate these cute looking girls who sometimes are so brazenly sexy( maybe some guys like that, ugh) and flaunt their bodies on the internet and especially in a 'n your face' kinda way. Thank God at least some people still have sense left.

Teenagers nowadays are like that Meh
And that's one of the reasons why I want to leave Facebook.
(I use it only for school stuffs...because our professors make groups there, and our cosplay group is there)
It is full of idiots.
I wouldn't mind someone's picture if it is a cosplay or an expression of one's self (like yours) or if it is artistic,
but something like that girl that you said.....never.

Deviantart is being invaded with such idiots.

This is deviantART, andyou kind of have to take into account that dA is primarily a hobbyist's site. There's no quality control whatsoever, and for every good piece posted here you get five hundred MS Paint ponies. If you're looking for a consistent source of quality art, this is not the site you want- you want places like Behance / CGTalk / SlashThree / Depthcore /

I get pretty tired of people whining about how 'deviantART isn't a social network'. It is, and even if it wasn't at its start, its culture and direction have changed over the years to cater more heavily to its target audience of hobbyists. I feel like you're kind of expecting dA to be something it's not and has never been, aka a professional environment dedicated to reliably producing and exhibiting high-quality work.

I've been there, but found the people rather unfriendly and unapproachable.

Yeah. It is. It has all characteristics of social media.

I feel like you're kind of expecting dA to be something it's not
I was hoping there would still be a mild level of moderation, common sense or decency here. Like there was on most forums in the early internet. But I guess the internet in general has grown out to be a shameless place nowadays.
JulieKrizan Featured By Owner Jan 16, 2014  Student Digital Artist
First off, sorry about how grouchy my original post sounded. I just reread it and realized that I was being a huge grump. :C

About the unapproachability- it's not that they're unfriendly, it's more that those forums are used by professionals who are there to display work, get critique, and improve- they aren't there to make lots of internet friends. That's partially the reason that those sites are full of high-quality work.

. . . crap, I sound like a jerk here too. HALP. :C
DamaiMikaz Featured By Owner Jan 16, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Well... I posted some stuff... but as I would hardly get feedback... I didn't post anymore.
Sure, there were some good people there that I could take example of. And I liked seeing the process of how some people worked on their art.
It's just that I feel like I don't exactly fit in there. I like drawing and I like getting better, but I'm nowhere to becoming a professional. I'm not planning to be one either, and that's a deliberate choice from my side (I have a good job already, and drawing all day wouldn't do my wrist injury any good). But because of my stance in that, I feel like people are not treating me like I'm a serious person.
Sure, I like to have fun sometimes. And my income doesn't depend on my artistic skills at all. But that doesn't mean I'm less interested in improvement.
Stettafire Featured By Owner Jul 13, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
The amount of people who have said that beacuse I'm not taking art as a career that means I shouldn't worry about improving is unreal. For me, that's where all the fun is

I think, yeah, they were just being foolish by criticizing your picture as... whoring? I don't get it.
It does make me "eh" at some nude "art" on here, but I suppose technically everything is art no matter the quality. Hell, sometimes I try to downgrade on my quality of art for a certain effect/look.
I think if they had seen her profile though, they would have added her to their list lol? You can't really assume they had come across her xD

( also isn't this new mention thing a great way to catch people talking about you behind your back? :chew: not that I've caught anyone like you have though xD fortunately )

Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe years. I realize that this adds nothing to the discourse, but the truth is, I doubt there is anything I could say that would. On the plus side, I found your post well written, not overly dramatic or alarmist, and I agree with most of it. As a result, after I click "submit", I'm going to go check out your profile and take a look at your art. :-)

cherrychree-chan Featured By Owner Jan 7, 2014
well that's sad, but the whole world is already getting sadder.  I don't think it's fair that up get accused/criticized badly while that other person had fans oogling the contents of her gallery and drooling with appreciation.
do they actually know that some people might be uncomfortable? I mean, they're just basically screaming o ma gawd look at ma gallery and just see all this nudity and watch me do more poses~
it's pretty sad.
Lewanut Featured By Owner Jan 7, 2014
Interesting. I'd imagine that the person complaining about your profile picture was likely projecting; I'd think that they probably felt uncomfortable about their own reaction to your photo and would rather have blamed you than themselves. It's similar to how males will often wrongly assume I'm gay, just because they feel uncomfortable about how dang sexy they think I am. These conclusions courtesy of myself playing armchair psychologist; all the furniture is insane.

I will point out that the inconsistencies in dA members' talk on photo "whoring" is likely due to the fact that the dA userbase is not homogeneous. (My watchers are widely inconsistent; sometimes they like mayonnaise, other times they hate it.) And there'd probably be more complaints about the pronz if the Mature Content filter didn't weed out most of the people who would object. Neither of which invalidate your main point, but overthinking things is fun.

people should be more careful on what they post online. like they will stay there forever. even though you delete it, someone has already saved it on their pc and they can repost anywhere. and especially girls shouldn't post their nude pictures online. artistic models are fine since female bodies are beautiful and very artistic in my opinion. but posting randomly for attention is never good. like come on treasure yourselfff
BIackhawks Featured By Owner Jan 7, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Well one day, those pictures that girl uploaded with one day come to haunt her. She should be careful of what she is posting online, it will be on the internet forever. It could ruin her career she is trying to get or worse; her life. That's why I only post drawings of cats XD
Queen--Zelda Featured By Owner Jan 7, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
I posted like, three selfies on here, only to show off a new wig, and sort of get feed back for the bangs I cut on it, but it got tons of views. I was happy that my friends on here finally got to see what I looked like, and got to check out my cosplay in progress, but things got out of hand. I really don't want pictures of myself because this is strictly role-play and ask, but if I cosplayed as Zelda, I would really want to.

I don't think cam-whoring is right, but nither is unprofessionally posting non-art on an art website, and sadly they're both mixing together. I'm sorry about those nasty messages.

Deviantart has never been that great of quality, even years back the front pages often consists of nonsense.

Whenever I go on the Japanese art website "" the front page is filled with amazing artwork and I can spend hours just browsing; there are no photos of anyone.(there are no ponies, weird fetish stuff, "artsy" photographs or images traces either, and if there is you usually find it's from an English speaking artist).
DamaiMikaz Featured By Owner Jan 14, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I think that also has to do with the difference in culture between Japan and America (because DA is mainly american people).
Japanese people are thought to be more polite and considerate then most western country's, and therefore might not upload nude pictures on an art side, out of consideration for others.
YONDER000 Featured By Owner Jan 17, 2014  Student General Artist

Really? Is it?
 How so?

I thought people really got their own say in what they wanted to do on PIXIV.
I know I've definitely not been heckled so far in to drawing a certain way or joining any sort of group.

I'm kinda just on the sidelines on PIXIV, much like dA.

However I guess I feel a stronger connection with the people there, even the most popular artists I've followed don't have that many followers and their greatful for your support, It just seems like a place for art to be art. People don't engage much with one another but it really does cut out the small but iritating parts of dA.

Still greatful to dA though for showing me how many artists are out there and how really applying yourself can help you go along way, so I can never truely resent it. ^^;
DamaiMikaz Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Well... keep into account that PIXIV is a smaller community than DA, because the main language is Japanese
YONDER000 Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2014  Student General Artist

Pixiv is great, but I have a couple issues with your comment.

First thing, Pixiv defaults to featured art, while DA defaults to newest. The Newest page on Pixiv is not super different from DAs.

Second, I think you and I have very, very different definitions of "no ponies." (Was gonna link the ones I saw that had been submitted within the last 24 hours, but DA thought it was spam.)
